Energy Summit 2019 held debates in Warsaw.
Declaration on the conditions of sustainable energy transition adopted.
On 1-2 October Energy Summit 2019 was held in Warsaw. After two days of debates the Summit participants adopted a declaration on sustainable - i.e. effective in terms of climate protection, but also economically rational and socially just energy transition in the European Union.
Polska Grupa Górnicza, European Association for Coal and Lignite - Euracoal and the Ministry of Energy invited representatives of European coal states to the capital city to debate on the conditions that must be met during transition towards low-emission (and in the future carbon-free) energy generation, so that the transformation is effective, but also not detrimental to the economy and the society. The Polish Prime Minister wrote about "the new dynamics of cooperation" in his letter to the participants, and the ministers of energy reminded the attendants that the objective of the congress was to announce a joint declaration that should be used by the EU authorities when preparing laws and strategies. Tomasz Rogala, President of Euracoal and the CEO of PGG emphasised that in the European discussion the perspective of the mining & energy industry is often ignored. During the two days of debates presentation were given in four thematic panels by more than 30 speakers: scientists, heads of the biggest European energy and mining companies (from Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic and other countries), representatives of local authorities, of the government and trade unions, politicians. The discussion focused on: natural environment, climate change and innovative technologies of climate protection, energy resource supply security, social problems and human capital in the transition period as well as expectation and demands of the sector with regards to imminent changes. PGG honoured prominent representatives of the sector for their contribution to sustainable transition. The congress culminated in adopting in Warsaw a 4-point declaration, that MEP Grzegorz Tobiszowski (former Minister of Energy responsible for mining) undertook to present to the European Parliament in Brussels. The document states e.g. that in order to meet the objectives of the climate policy it is necessary to engage all the global emitters and that the costs of transition vary for different countries and therefore they need to have the right to implement actions that are optimum for them and to do in a flexible way. The declaration warns that energy transition cannot cause social unrest nor impoverish the mining regions of our continent. It shows the significance of the value chain generated by the mining & energy sector for the EU inhabitants. The congress also demanded that balance be maintained between climate protection versus economic competitiveness and energy security in the EU countries.
